The Banyani Tree Planting Program is our flagship environmental restoration initiative. We partner with local communities, schools, and landowners across Ghana to plant indigenous trees that restore biodiversity, stabilise soils, sequester carbon, and rebuild the natural ecosystems that communities depend on.
What makes our approach different is the emphasis on community guardianship. Every tree planted has a named human guardian — a farmer, student, or community elder — who is trained and supported to ensure the tree survives and thrives long after our team has moved on.
We focus on native species that belong to the Ghanaian landscape: trees that local wildlife knows, that local farmers understand, and that will persist for generations. This isn't just planting — it's restoration with roots.
"Each tree planted is a promise — to the community, to the climate, and to the next generation."
We work with communities to identify degraded land or priority ecosystems — mapping soil conditions, water access, and species suitability before a single seedling is planted.
Native seedlings are grown in local nurseries — often run by community members — using traditional knowledge and sustainable horticulture methods.
Planting events bring together schools, farmers, elders, and youth groups. Every participant becomes a guardian, assigned a tree to monitor and protect.
Guardians report tree health through a simple mobile check-in. Our team conducts quarterly field visits to assess survival rates, growth, and ecosystem recovery.
Each mature tree absorbs 10–20kg of CO₂ per year. Our planted trees collectively offset thousands of tonnes over their lifetime.
Trees regulate rainfall, reduce runoff, and recharge groundwater — critical for farming communities in climate-vulnerable areas.
Native trees bring back birds, insects, and small mammals — rebuilding ecological webs that support food systems and pollination.
Many planted trees provide shade, fruit, or timber — directly improving the income and food security of participating farming families.
"When I planted that tree with Banyani, I didn't just plant a tree. I planted something for my children to stand under."— Community Participant, Central Region, Ghana
